Horrid autumn- 10/11/17
Point: Song Thrush, Robin 2, Rock Pipit 4, Greenfinch 12, Chaffinch 7, Reed Bunting,
Vis mig: Pied Wagtail 3, Goldfinch 1, Chaffinch 1.
Mound: Buzzard, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Meadow Pipit, Skylark, Fieldfare 16, Song Thrush 10, Redwing 3, Chaffinch 29, Goldfinch 5.
Spent a bit of time watching Dunlin. 3,740 was a fair increase over recent numbers, and the feeding flocks on the falling tide were not following script- some new in? Instead of moving off onto Bartlett Spit, these birds, mainly on Rainham Saltings, were staying put, tightly put, with more than eighty per cent in a flock just east of Mariners Creek. Over the next two hours just 525 moved further off, 75 to Ferol Peak, the remainder to close to Friars saltings. What can you really read into it? At this stage, absolutely nothing but, once again, a fun thing to watch out for in the future.
